How to Become a Member

To qualify for Home Boarding, your dog must become a Knitted Dog member, but how?

To become a member your dog must:

  • Successfully pass our screening process
  • Attend the daycare regularly (at least one day a week during school term time) OR
  • Have attended the daycare regularly for at least 3 years AND continue to book regular holidays (at least once every six months)

Once your dog is a member, you can book them in for Home Boarding whenever I have availability & also benefit from perks such as free monthly social walks & discounts on training packages through Patchwork Puppies!

The Screening Process

Here at The Knitted Dog I am very careful about taking on new members & any potential clients go through a rigorous screening process before being accepted into the family.

This is nothing personal - it is just extremely important that any new member dog is well-suited to the set up we have here & finds their time with us enjoyable & fun.

As a general idea, a 'good match' would:

  • be small to medium in size - roughly 8 to 18kg adult size
  • be moderately active - can manage a 60 minute walk plus some play time (or would be able to as an adult)
  • be sociable & friendly with other dogs - no history of aggression or extreme fearfulness
  • be friendly & comfortable around children, including babies & toddlers
  • have no serious health issues & be up to date on all necessary vaccinations, flea & worm treatments
  • have a good level of basic training, including toilet training & recall

If this sounds like your dog, then get in touch!

Trial Walks & Settling Period

After you've been in touch & it's been decided that your dog sounds like a good fit, the screening process continues as follows:

  1. Trial walk with me - you & your dog go for a short walk with me so I can assess their current training level & social skills.
  2. Trial walk with me & some current member dogs - you & your dog go for a walk with me, my dog Rosie, & some current member dogs. This will usually be on the day you're hoping to book so that your dog gets to meet that day's gang (e.g. the Tuesday gang).
  3. Premises tour & paperwork - you attend the premises without your dog for a tour & to complete some paperwork over a cup of tea. This includes your client questionnaire, contract & vet release form. We will also confirm dates & drop off times for your dog's first few months in daycare on the assumption that they will settle in well.
  4. Trial day in daycare - the big day! You drop your dog off at the premises in the morning for a day filled with fun & adventure & pick them up again in the evening! You will be kept up to date on all their antics throughout via WhatsApp so be prepared for lots of cute pictures & videos!

Your dog then stays on a 'probation period' for their first 4 weeks as they are closely supervised & guided by me. You will receive regular updates on how your dog is settling in during this time & which dogs they are forming friendships with.

Once their 'probation period' is over, they will then be able to have a trial overnight stay &, assuming this is successful too, will become a fully fledged member of The Knitted Dog!
